Since October 10, 2022, new unlimited-civil personal injury lawsuits in Los Angeles County are filed and heard in the Los Angeles Superior Court district where the injury occurred — a departure from the more centralized approach the county's four smaller neighbors (Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego) still use with a single civil courthouse. LA County's districts include Central (downtown, historically home to the Stanley Mosk and Spring Street courthouses), Northeast (Pasadena and Alhambra), North Valley (San Fernando, Chatsworth, and Santa Clarita), Southeast (Norwalk, Bellflower, and Downey), Southwest (Torrance), and several others covering the rest of the county. In practice, this means the first question in an LA County injury case usually isn't "who was at fault" — it's "which district does my case belong in," because that answer determines the judge, the courtroom, and how far you or your attorney may need to travel for hearings.
The county's Level I trauma centers
LA County's trauma network reflects how spread out the county is. LAC+USC Medical Center (now also known as Los Angeles General Medical Center), 2051 Marengo St, Los Angeles, is a Level I trauma center serving the central and eastern parts of the county. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, 1000 W. Carson St, West Carson, is a Level I trauma center serving the South Bay and harbor area — it sits immediately adjacent to Torrance and is generally the closest Level I facility for South Bay crash and injury cases. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood is a Level I trauma center serving the Westside and the Valley.
