How DUIs are policed in Pico Rivera
Pico Rivera has never run its own police department. Since incorporating in 1958 it has contracted with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, patrolled out of the Pico Rivera Station, 6631 S. Passons Blvd., Pico Rivera, CA 90660, (562) 949-2421. The station's coverage runs past Pico Rivera's own city line into the unincorporated pockets around it — El Rancho, Los Nietos, and West Whittier — so a deputy who stops a driver on Rosemead Boulevard or Whittier Boulevard may be answering calls from any of those areas on the same shift.
Two freeways brush the city without a clean, single answer on who patrols them. Interstate 605 runs along Pico Rivera's eastern edge and State Route 60 (the Pomona Freeway) clips its northern corner, and a secondary source lists CHP's Santa Fe Springs Area office, 10051 Orr and Day Road, Santa Fe Springs, as the command covering that I-605/SR-60 stretch. CHP's own Area-office page for East Los Angeles separately lists unincorporated pockets "within Pico Rivera" among the communities it serves on SR-60 — the two offices' territories appear to split along the unincorporated-versus-city-limits line rather than Pico Rivera falling cleanly under one CHP command.
- Pico Rivera has contracted with the LA County Sheriff's Department for police services since its January 1958 incorporation; there is no city police department and no second sub-station.
- California OTS 2023 traffic-safety rankings place Pico Rivera in population Group C (average population 60,859), with 36 DUI arrests that year (ranked 13th of 103 comparably sized agencies) and 314 total fatal-and-injury collision victims (ranked 21st of 103) — raw figures, not an interpretive claim.
Where a Pico Rivera DUI case is heard
This one takes some explaining. A commonly cited secondary source describing the Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station's territory states that cases arising there are brought to "the Whittier or Norwalk Courthouse." We checked the Los Angeles Superior Court's own current site directly, and as of this review the Whittier Courthouse no longer hears any criminal matters at all — it is listed as a family law courthouse only. That is the same 2013 reassignment that sent Whittier's own criminal docket to the Downey and Bellflower courthouses, depending on where the arrest happened, so Pico Rivera's routing could plausibly have followed that same path rather than landing at Norwalk specifically — the older source naming Norwalk may simply predate that reassignment. We are not going to pick one of the three just to give you a clean answer: confirm the courthouse printed on your own citation, or call the clerk, before assuming.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office prosecutes misdemeanor and felony DUI cases arising from a Pico Rivera stop; the city does not maintain its own prosecutor's office for DUI matters. Our Downey Courthouse and Bellflower Courthouse pages below cover the two courthouses most likely to hear a Pico Rivera case; Norwalk does not yet have its own dedicated courthouse hub on this site.

Booking and getting a car back after a Pico Rivera arrest
Pico Rivera Station, 6631 S. Passons Blvd., is only the intake point after a DUI arrest — nobody stays there. From there the county's custody system takes over: men are generally moved downtown to the Inmate Reception Center, Men's Central Jail, or Twin Towers, and women to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. What happens next — release on your own recognizance, bail, or a cite-and-release — depends on the specifics of the stop. If you're trying to track down a family member arrested in Pico Rivera, call our office and we can help you figure out where they landed in that pipeline.
Your vehicle is handled separately from your booking. An ordinary post-arrest tow under Vehicle Code §22651(h) just means retrieving the car from the tow yard once you square away the release paperwork and the towing and storage fees. The 30-day mandatory impound under §14602.6 is a different and much narrower rule — it only applies when the driver was also unlicensed, suspended, revoked, or restricted without a required interlock device, not to a DUI arrest on its own. We'll sort out which one applies to you during a free consultation.
From two farm towns to Pico Rivera's rodeo arena and its dam-project headache
Pico Rivera didn't exist as a single place until January 1958, when the unincorporated communities of Pico (named for Pío Pico, California's last Mexican governor) and Rivera (Spanish for "riverbank," tracing to the Santa Fe Railway's 1887 arrival) voted — by a narrow 56% margin — to merge and incorporate together rather than risk being annexed piecemeal by larger neighboring cities. It became Los Angeles County's 61st incorporated city. The 2020 Census counted 62,088 residents across the city's 8.32 square miles (down slightly from 62,942 in 2010), a population that is 90.5% Hispanic or Latino — one of the higher concentrations of any city in the county — with non-Hispanic White residents at 3.8%.
The Pico Rivera Sports Arena, built in 1979, is reputed to be the largest Mexican rodeo ring in the country and draws regular charreadas, jaripeos, boxing, and Latin music acts. In 2024 it landed in an unusual bind: a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to repair the aging Whittier Narrows Dam threatened to remove one of the arena's two required access roads, putting the venue's future in question — the city floated a roughly $125 million revitalization plan partly in response. The city-owned Pico Rivera Golf Club, 3260 Fairway Drive — a nine-hole course designed by William "Billy" Bell and opened in 1965 — has been caught up in the same dam-safety project, with the course scaled back to a partial routing during the repair work. (A separate, similarly named Rio Hondo Golf Club sometimes confused with a Pico Rivera landmark actually sits across the city line in Downey.) Pico Rivera's other defining landmark is aerospace, not recreation: the Ford assembly plant that once stood on Washington Boulevard was bought by Northrop, which built the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber program there before the plant closed and the site was redeveloped into the Pico Rivera Towne Center.
