How DUIs are policed in La Mesa
La Mesa runs its own municipal police department — the La Mesa Police Department, headquartered at 8085 University Avenue, with roughly 69 sworn officers covering about 100,000 calls for service a year. That's a different model than Lemon Grove next door, which contracts with the San Diego County Sheriff for police service — a La Mesa DUI stop inside city limits is typically a La Mesa PD officer, not a Sheriff's deputy. (Spring Valley and Alpine, also nearby, are unincorporated communities where the Sheriff is the primary agency by default, not a city contracting out — a different arrangement than a Sheriff's-contract city.)
Freeway enforcement is a separate lane. Interstate 8 runs through the city, and State Route 125 crosses it at La Mesa's eastern edge near Grossmont Center — this stretch of SR-125, between SR-94 in Spring Valley and I-8, is part of the free Ramona Freeway corridor; only the southern South Bay Expressway segment (SR-54 south to Otay Mesa) is tolled. CHP's El Cajon Area office patrols the region's freeways and, per local news coverage, has responded to collisions on I-8 and SR-125 in and around La Mesa, though the office's own posted "communities served" list (Dehesa, Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego, Jamul, Lakeside, Alpine and others) doesn't name La Mesa specifically — CHP's freeway jurisdiction and its published community list aren't the same thing, and only the freeway portion of a La Mesa-area stop is likely CHP's.
- La Mesa PD patrols city streets; CHP's El Cajon Area office handles freeway stops on I-8 and SR-125 through the city, though CHP's own published community list doesn't name La Mesa directly (see above).
- California's Office of Traffic Safety 2023 rankings placed La Mesa (Group C, average population 61,072) at 169 DUI arrests, ranking 92nd out of 103 comparably sized California cities, and 39 alcohol-involved-collision victims killed or injured, ranking 17th out of 103. Both numbers are directly from OTS; we don't read more into the gap between them than that.
Where a La Mesa DUI case is heard
A DUI arrest in La Mesa is filed with the East County Division of San Diego Superior Court. The court's own ZIP Code List (SDSC Form ADM-254) assigns every La Mesa ZIP code — 91941, 91942, 91943, and 91944 — to the EAST division, with no exceptions carved out for La Mesa the way the court's Local Rules carve out Del Mar and Coronado. The San Diego County District Attorney's East County branch, co-located with the courthouse at 250 E. Main Street, prosecutes — La Mesa has no city attorney with criminal prosecution authority of its own.

Booking and getting a car back after a La Mesa arrest
La Mesa PD holds arrestees briefly at its own station before transfer into the San Diego County Sheriff's detention system. Booking happens at one of the Sheriff's three intake facilities — San Diego Central Jail downtown for men, the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee for women — and a man's custody may later move to a non-booking housing facility like the George F. Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa. Which facility a particular arrestee ends up in depends on the case, so family members should use the Sheriff's Department's online inmate locator to confirm custody before driving anywhere. An impounded vehicle is a separate matter from the criminal case — bring a valid license, current registration, and proof of insurance to whichever tow yard the arresting report names.
La Mesa's Village and Grossmont Center — why location matters in a DUI case
Two parts of La Mesa are worth knowing if you were arrested nearby. La Mesa Boulevard's historic downtown district — known locally as "the Village" — is a dense strip of restaurants and bars served by the San Diego Trolley's La Mesa Boulevard and Spring Street stations (Orange Line), with the nearby Grossmont Transit Center adding Green Line service. Grossmont Center, the large regional shopping and dining complex near the I-8/SR-125 interchange on the city's east side, sits close to the freeway corridor CHP patrols — whether a stop that starts in the Center's parking lot is handled by La Mesa PD or CHP can depend on exactly where it happened, though either way the case is prosecuted by the same office (the San Diego County DA's East County branch, as above) regardless of which agency made the arrest.
