How DUIs are policed in Coronado
Coronado runs its own municipal police department — the Coronado Police Department, headquartered at 700 Orange Avenue (non-emergency line (619) 522-7350) — rather than contracting out to the County Sheriff. That puts Coronado in a different position from two of its South Bay courthouse-mates: Bonita is an unincorporated community patrolled by the San Diego County Sheriff by default, and Imperial Beach contracts with the Sheriff for police service; Coronado, like neighboring Chula Vista and National City, fields its own sworn officers on its own streets.
Coronado is also a Navy town in a way no other South Bay community is. Naval Air Station North Island sits on the peninsula's northern tip, and the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado — the Navy SEALs' West Coast training base — runs along the Silver Strand to the south; the two, along with several smaller sites, were consolidated into Naval Base Coronado in 1997. A large share of the city's population is Navy-affiliated, and a DUI stop near a base gate can draw Navy Security attention alongside Coronado PD, but an arrest anywhere inside city limits — including on base-adjacent streets — is still booked and charged as a Coronado PD case, not a military one, unless the driver is active-duty and separately referred for military proceedings.
- Coronado PD patrols the city directly; it has never contracted with the County Sheriff for primary police service, unlike Bonita (unincorporated, Sheriff-patrolled) and Imperial Beach (a Sheriff's contract city) among its South Bay courthouse-mates.
- Jurisdiction on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge (SR-75) itself is genuinely unsettled in public sources: Caltrans owns and maintains the bridge and CHP has issued SigAlerts for bridge incidents, but a 2016-era state bill (AB 2075) that would have transferred SR-75 to the cities along its route found Coronado alone unwilling to take over its own stretch — we treat exactly which agency handles a given stop on the bridge as an open question rather than guess at it.
Where a Coronado DUI case is heard
A DUI arrest anywhere in Coronado — downtown near Orange Avenue, on the Silver Strand, or on the Coronado end of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge — is filed with the South County Division of San Diego Superior Court at the South County Regional Center, 500 Third Avenue, Chula Vista. This is the one piece of San Diego County DUI routing most likely to trip someone up: the Superior Court's own general-purpose ZIP Code List (ADM-254) shows Coronado's 92118 ZIP as CENTRAL, which on its face would point toward the downtown San Diego courthouse. But San Diego Superior Court Local Rule 1.2.2(H)(2) separately carves criminal cases arising in Coronado out to the South County Division instead — the mirror image of the same mechanism that sends Del Mar's criminal cases, despite its own CENTRAL ZIP code, north to the Vista courthouse instead. For a DUI specifically, the Local Rule controls, not the general ZIP table a search engine or a form might surface.
The San Diego County District Attorney's South Bay branch prosecutes every Coronado DUI, misdemeanor or felony. Coronado is its own incorporated city — it has never been annexed into the City of San Diego the way Rancho Bernardo or San Ysidro were — so the City Attorney's limited misdemeanor-prosecution authority (which covers San Diego proper, plus Poway and 4S Ranch by a separate contract) has no reach into Coronado regardless of how the ZIP/Local-Rule question above shakes out.

Booking and getting a car back after a Coronado arrest
Coronado PD holds a new arrestee briefly before transfer into the San Diego County Sheriff's detention system — the department has no long-term jail of its own. Booking happens at one of the Sheriff's three intake-equipped facilities: San Diego Central Jail downtown for men or the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee for women, with men sometimes moved afterward to the South Bay Detention Facility in Chula Vista for custody closer to the courthouse. Family members should use the Sheriff's online inmate locator to confirm exactly where someone landed rather than assume a single facility.
A routine DUI tow (Vehicle Code §22651(h)) usually just means retrieving the car from the tow yard once you handle the release paperwork and fees. A mandatory 30-day impound under Vehicle Code §14602.6 is a separate, more serious outcome that applies only when the driver was also unlicensed, suspended, revoked, or restricted without a required interlock device — not for a DUI arrest by itself. The Hotel del, the Navy, and the bridge — why Coronado doesn't fit the rest of the South Bay
Coronado incorporated on December 11, 1890, two years after the Hotel del Coronado opened in February 1888. The hotel's original backers ran out of money almost immediately; sugar magnate John D. Spreckels, who had already bought into the Coronado Beach Company in 1889, took over full ownership within a few years and held it until his death in 1926 — it remains a National Historic Landmark and the city's best-known landmark today. Spreckels also built Tent City, a seasonal beachfront resort that ran from 1900 into the 1930s, on the shoreline south of the hotel.
The San Diego-Coronado Bridge (SR-75), which opened August 3, 1969 and runs about 2.1 miles with roughly 200 feet of clearance over the bay — enough for the Navy's largest ships to pass beneath — ended the ferry service that had connected Coronado to San Diego for decades and remains the main non-military route on and off the peninsula. On the military side, Naval Air Station North Island was commissioned in 1917 on Coronado's northern tip and was formally recognized by Congress's House Armed Services Committee as the "Birthplace of Naval Aviation" on August 15, 1963. It merged with the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado — a roughly 1,000-acre Silver Strand site opened in 1943 that still trains Navy SEALs today — into the consolidated Naval Base Coronado in 1997. The city's own estimate of about 23,000 residents counts Navy personnel and dependents stationed in Coronado; the 2020 Census, which generally doesn't count them the same way, put the civilian population at 20,192 — two different, both legitimate, numbers that are easy to conflate.
