How DUIs are policed in Yucca Valley
Yucca Valley has no municipal police department of its own — it contracts with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for police service, a relationship that has run since the town moved to a contract model in July 1992, about eight months after incorporating. The current one-year contract, renewed through June 30, 2027, is valued at roughly $7.4 million, and a single Sheriff's captain is assigned as police chief for both Yucca Valley and neighboring Twentynine Palms under parallel contracts. Exactly where the local patrol station sits is genuinely unclear across sources: the Sheriff's own current patrol-station listings for both towns point to 63665 Twentynine Palms Highway in Joshua Tree, while the Town of Yucca Valley's own public-safety page instead describes a Morongo Basin substation on White Feather Road next to Hi-Desert Medical Center, plus a satellite office at the Yucca Valley Community Center — two town sources that don't fully agree with each other, let alone with the Sheriff's own page. We're flagging that discrepancy rather than picking whichever address sounds more official.
Highway 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway) runs the length of the town and is the main east-west corridor through the Morongo Basin, carrying both local traffic and travelers headed to or from Joshua Tree National Park. The California Highway Patrol's Morongo Basin Area office handles DUI enforcement on SR-62 and SR-247, while Sheriff's deputies patrol Yucca Valley's own surface streets and respond to local arrests — which local news reports describe as being booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, a local holding facility serving the Basin rather than a full county detention center.
- California OTS 2023 traffic-safety data (population group E, average population roughly 22,021) credits Yucca Valley with 16 DUI arrests, ranked 25th of 103 comparably sized agencies — but a composite score of 78 ranked the town 5th-best of those same 103 agencies overall, with 23 alcohol-involved collision victims ranked 9th of 103. Read that as a relatively strong overall safety ranking alongside an unremarkable raw DUI-arrest count, not an explanation of why.
- The 2020 Census counted 21,738 residents across the town, with a median age of 42.9 and roughly 84% of residents classified as urban — figures that have barely moved since (a July 2023 Census estimate put the population at 21,664, essentially flat).
Where a Yucca Valley DUI case is heard
A DUI arrest anywhere in Yucca Valley is filed at the Joshua Tree District courthouse, 6527 White Feather Road, Joshua Tree, CA 92252 — the only criminal courthouse serving the Morongo Basin, so a misdemeanor DUI and a felony-level DUI are both handled at the same White Feather Road building rather than split across two courts. There's one honest wrinkle worth being upfront about: the court's own published "Areas Served" list names Yucca Valley inside a clause reading "unincorporated areas of: Johnson Valley, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley" — even though Yucca Valley has in fact been an incorporated town since November 27, 1991. We read that as sloppy drafting on the court's own list, not a claim that Yucca Valley's cases actually go somewhere else; no other courthouse has a plausible claim to Yucca Valley, and the court's own Joshua Tree District page separately and plainly lists Yucca Valley among the communities it serves. Still, we'd rather flag the court's imprecise wording than pretend its own list reads more cleanly than it does.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office prosecutes the case out of its Joshua Tree branch office, housed at the same White Feather Road Government Center as the courthouse itself.

Booking and getting a car back after a Yucca Valley arrest
Local reporting on Morongo Basin DUI enforcement describes arrestees being booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, a local holding facility serving the Basin rather than one of the county's large central detention centers — we haven't been able to independently confirm its exact address or whether longer holds get transferred elsewhere in the county system, so treat that as the starting point for a booking inquiry, not the final word. Family members trying to locate someone arrested in Yucca Valley can call our office for help tracking down the right facility.
Your car is a separate matter from the arrest itself. A routine tow after a DUI arrest usually just means retrieving the vehicle from the tow yard once you've handled the release paperwork, towing fee, and storage fee — an ordinary Vehicle Code §22651(h) tow. A mandatory 30-day impound under Vehicle Code §14602.6 is a different, more serious outcome, and it only applies when the driver was also operating on a suspended or revoked license, on a restricted license without a required interlock device, or without ever having been issued one — not for a DUI arrest on its own. From Lone Star Ranch to a national-park gateway town
Long before it carried its current name, the area now called Yucca Valley was known as Lone Star, or Lone Star Ranch — a stop for travelers crossing between the San Bernardino and Coachella valleys after settlers began arriving in the 1880s. The town incorporated on November 27, 1991, making it one of the more recently incorporated cities in San Bernardino County, and today it directly borders Joshua Tree National Park. That border has reshaped the local economy: the town now has several hundred active short-term-rental listings (figures vary by data source, roughly 600 to 735 depending on when and how the count was taken) built almost entirely around travelers visiting the park, and the Town itself requires a short-term-rental permit for hosts. It's a different kind of growth than the citrus or railroad booms that built many of its West Valley neighbors — Yucca Valley's modern identity is tied directly to the park next door.
Two homegrown landmarks give the town an identity beyond the park traffic. Desert Christ Park began when sculptor Frank Antone Martin's proposal to place a monumental statue of Christ on the rim of the Grand Canyon was turned down by the National Park Service; a local minister, Rev. Eddie Garver, offered land in Yucca Valley instead. Martin's statue, nicknamed the "Unwanted Christ," drew national attention when Life Magazine covered the story in April 1951, and the park was dedicated that Easter Sunday. Martin went on to add roughly 40 more white sculptures depicting scenes from Christ's life before his death in 1961; the park fell out of favor with town government for some years afterward and is now maintained by a dedicated nonprofit. The town's other signature event, Grubstake Days, is held every year on the day before Memorial Day and centers on a parade, a carnival, and a rodeo — a tradition that predates the town's 1991 incorporation by decades.
