Who makes the stop: the Lake Elsinore Station, and CHP on I-15
Lake Elsinore does not run its own police department. The city contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, patrolled out of the Lake Elsinore Station, 333 Limited Avenue, Lake Elsinore, CA 92530, (951) 245-3300 — the same station that also covers the contract city of Wildomar, plus surrounding unincorporated pockets of southwest Riverside County. (Canyon Lake was also a Lake Elsinore Station contract city until it launched its own police department in August 2026.) Inside city limits, deputies patrol everything from the Interstate 15/Railroad Canyon Road interchange on the city's east side to the historic downtown grid along Main Street on the lake's north shore.
Off the city's surface streets, the California Highway Patrol has jurisdiction on Interstate 15 and State Route 74, the two highways that cross directly through Lake Elsinore. Which CHP area office actually handles that stretch is not entirely consistent across the sources we reviewed: a 2019 fatal collision near Lake Elsinore on I-15 was investigated by an officer identified as a 27-year veteran of the CHP Riverside Area, while a 2025 news report describes CHP's Temecula office running dedicated speed and street-racing enforcement on I-15 "from the San Diego County line to Lake Elsinore." Both offices patrol this part of the I-15 corridor in some capacity; we have not found a single source that cleanly draws the boundary between them at Lake Elsinore's city limits, so we're not going to guess which one responds to your specific stop — if you know which CHP unit made your stop, that detail matters less to your defense than what the officer wrote down, which we'll go through with you.
- California's Office of Traffic Safety 2023 rankings placed Lake Elsinore 64th out of 103 comparable cities for DUI arrests, with 141 reported that year, and 43rd out of 103 for alcohol-involved-collision victims killed or injured, with 30 that year — a composite ranking of 70th out of 103 overall.
- Lake Elsinore has built a regional motorsports identity around its namesake lake: the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park off-road racing facility, the long-running Elsinore Grand Prix off-road race, and Skydive Elsinore, one of the busier skydiving drop zones in Southern California — all of which draw weekend crowds from well outside the city and, with them, extra traffic and DUI enforcement along I-15 and Highway 74 on event weekends.
Your case is heard at the Southwest Justice Center, not in Lake Elsinore
A DUI arrest anywhere in Lake Elsinore — on I-15, Highway 74, Railroad Canyon Road, or a downtown street near the lake — is filed at the Southwest Justice Center, 30755 Auld Road, Murrieta, CA 92563. That courthouse's own dedicated page on this site confirms it by name as one of the cities the Southwest Justice Center serves, alongside Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar, and Canyon Lake. The Riverside County District Attorney's Southwest Region office prosecutes the case, not the City of Lake Elsinore.
Southwest Justice Center — court & DMV details for a Lake Elsinore arrest
Booking, towing, and getting a car back after a Lake Elsinore arrest
Southwest-corridor DUI arrests, including those out of Lake Elsinore, most often route to the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta — the county's own regional booking pattern for everything that lands at the Southwest Justice Center, including Wildomar and Canyon Lake arrests. A routine DUI tow under Vehicle Code §22651(h) usually just means retrieving your car from the tow yard once you handle the release paperwork and fees. A mandatory 30-day impound under Vehicle Code §14602.6 is a different, more serious outcome that applies only when the driver was also unlicensed, suspended, revoked, or restricted without a required interlock device — not for a DUI arrest on its own. We'll go over which situation applies to your stop during your free consultation.
There's no full-service DMV field office in Lake Elsinore — the 10-day clock still runs
Lake Elsinore has no state-run DMV field office of its own. There is a self-service DMV kiosk at the Albertsons on Riverside Drive, but a kiosk handles routine registration and record transactions only — it cannot process a DUI administrative per se (APS) hearing request. The nearest full-service DMV field offices are the Murrieta Express office on Clinton Keith Road and the Temecula office on Diaz Road, both a short drive south on I-15. In practice, a Lake Elsinore DUI arrestee requesting an APS hearing is better served calling the DMV's statewide Driver Safety line directly, (833) 543-7703, since Inland Empire hearings are handled by phone rather than as a walk-in appointment. The 10-day countdown from arrest keeps running regardless of which office — or kiosk — is nearby.
A city named for a Shakespearean castle, built around California's largest natural freshwater lake
The lake at the city's center was originally called Laguna Grande by early Spanish explorers. When a townsite was laid out on its northeastern shore and incorporated on April 9, 1888 — reportedly the 73rd city to incorporate in California, about 38 years after statehood — it was renamed Elsinore, after the English name for Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, Denmark, the real-world fortress Shakespeare used as the setting for Hamlet. At roughly 3,000 acres, Lake Elsinore is the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California, and the modern city, population 70,265 at the 2020 Census, has grown considerably since an estimated 35,000 residents in the mid-2000s. Its historic downtown district along Main Street — antique shops, a local museum, and a city park whose land was donated back in 1906 — sits just blocks from the lakefront.
The city's other major landmark has nothing to do with the water: the Lake Elsinore Diamond, home of the Lake Elsinore Storm, a Minor League Baseball California League affiliate that has played there since the stadium opened in 1994. Between the Storm's season, the motorsports park's off-road events, the Elsinore Grand Prix, and Skydive Elsinore's year-round jump schedule, Lake Elsinore draws a steady stream of weekend visitors from across Southern California — exactly the kind of out-of-town traffic that tends to produce DUI stops along I-15 and Highway 74 on event nights. For what a license suspension does and doesn't let you do while your case is pending, see our license suspension page.
