How DUIs are policed in La Quinta
La Quinta has never run its own independent municipal police force. The city incorporated on May 1, 1982 — Riverside County's 18th city — and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department has provided law enforcement services under contract since that same year. The city brands the arrangement as the "La Quinta Police Department," with a Sheriff's captain serving as the city's de facto chief of police, but every deputy on patrol is a county employee working under a renewable services agreement rather than a city payroll. La Quinta is one of roughly a dozen Riverside County cities that contract with the Sheriff's Department this way rather than standing up a department of its own; the current two-year agreement (July 2025–June 2027) was budgeted at just under $20 million for law enforcement services in its first year.
Washington Street and Highway 111 are La Quinta's two main arterials and the corridors where most DUI stops happen, feeding resort and golf-course traffic in from Indian Wells, Palm Desert, and Indio. The California Highway Patrol's Indio-area office (CHP 630) patrols Highway 111 and the other state routes threading through the Coachella Valley, so a stop on 111 itself — as opposed to a city surface street — can be made by CHP rather than a Sheriff's deputy, though either way the case is prosecuted the same way. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, La Quinta recorded 115 DUI arrests in 2023, ranking 73rd out of 93 comparably sized California agencies that year — a mid-pack enforcement profile for a city whose population swells seasonally with winter visitors and golf-tournament crowds.
- La Quinta's law enforcement contract with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department has run continuously since the city's May 1, 1982 incorporation — the city has never operated an independent police force of its own.
- The city's 2020 Census population was 37,558, up from roughly 4,200–5,200 residents at incorporation in 1982 — explosive growth driven largely by the golf-resort and retirement-home development that followed the La Quinta Resort's early success.
Where a La Quinta DUI case is heard
A DUI arrest anywhere in La Quinta — Old Town, PGA West, SilverRock, or along Washington Street or Highway 111 — is filed at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, a short drive northeast of the city. Our own Larson Justice Center page confirms, by name, that the courthouse serves La Quinta along with Indio, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, Coachella, and Desert Hot Springs — effectively the entire Coachella Valley. The Riverside County District Attorney's desert office prosecutes every case; La Quinta has no city attorney and no local courthouse of its own, so even a routine first-offense misdemeanor travels to Indio for arraignment, pretrial conferences, and, if it gets that far, trial.

Booking and getting a car back after a La Quinta arrest
A La Quinta DUI arrest typically books into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio, next to the Larson Justice Center itself — the same jail that serves the rest of the Coachella Valley. A routine DUI tow (Vehicle Code §22651(h)) means you or someone you authorize can retrieve the vehicle from the tow yard once you handle the release paperwork and pay the towing and storage fees. A mandatory 30-day impound under §14602.6 is a separate, more serious outcome that applies only when the driver was also unlicensed, or on a suspended, revoked, or restricted-without-interlock license at the time — it is not a blanket rule for every DUI arrest, and we check which situation applies to your stop during your free consultation.
A resort city built on golf — and what that means for enforcement
La Quinta's own history begins with the La Quinta Resort, opened in 1926 by Walter H. Morgan on roughly 1,400 acres at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains — an early Hollywood getaway that reportedly hosted Clark Gable and Greta Garbo and gave the city its name decades before incorporation. That resort DNA still defines the place: PGA West alone carries five championship courses, including the Pete Dye Stadium Course and its island-green 17th hole, home to The American Express PGA TOUR event each January; the city-owned SilverRock Resort adds a municipal course that has hosted its own PGA TOUR pro-am. Old Town La Quinta, the walkable village core, runs a weekly farmers market, Art on Main, and outdoor concerts, and the biannual La Quinta Art Celebration (held in spring and fall) draws juried artists and crowds from across the region. The city's own tourism branding calls it the "Gem of the Desert." For a different kind of outdoor draw, Lake Cahuilla County Park, a roughly 710-acre Riverside County park on the city's southeast edge, offers camping, fishing, and picnic grounds away from the golf-resort core.
Golf carts, resort traffic, and a DUI law that doesn't make exceptions
La Quinta's golf-resort communities move a lot of people around on golf carts, not just cars — and California's DUI statute does not carve out an exception for that. Vehicle Code §23152 applies to driving "a vehicle" under the influence, and the Code's own definition of "vehicle" covers any device that can propel or move people or property on a highway, a definition broad enough to reach a golf cart being driven on a public street. A 2017 case out of La Quinta drew coverage for exactly that reason: a man was reportedly arrested for DUI while driving a golf cart. We have not located a published appellate decision testing this specific scenario, but the statutory text itself does not exempt golf carts, and treating a cart like "just a cart" after drinking at the clubhouse or a resort event is a real legal risk, not just a theoretical one.
