How DUIs are policed in Coachella
Coachella does not run its own municipal police force. The city contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement — an arrangement in place since 1998 — and patrol is based out of the Sheriff's Thermal Station, 86625 Airport Boulevard, Thermal, CA 92274, which also covers the city of La Quinta and the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District. The City Council and County Board of Supervisors renewed that arrangement through a five-year Agreement for Law Enforcement Services running July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2029, with an estimated FY2024-25 cost to the city of roughly $11.2 million and an added deputy sheriff's position. A Coachella DUI arrest, in other words, is typically made by a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy working under contract, not a separate city police officer.
The California Highway Patrol handles DUI enforcement on the freeways and state highways running through and around Coachella. CHP's own Indio-area office page lists Coachella by name among the cities it serves, alongside Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, and Desert Hot Springs, and states that the office patrols Interstate 10 and State Routes 62, 74, 86, 111, and 177 across the Coachella Valley. State Route 111 — the valley's historic main north-south corridor, which used to run concurrently with SR-86 through Coachella before SR-86 was realigned to a newer expressway — passes directly through the city, making it, along with the I-10 approach routes, a recurring site of CHP DUI stops serving Coachella.
- California's Office of Traffic Safety 2023 rankings credit Coachella with 53 DUI arrests, ranking 35th out of 93 comparably sized cities statewide.
- The same 2023 OTS data lists 24 victims killed or injured in alcohol-involved collisions tied to Coachella, ranking 25th out of 93 comparable cities — and a composite traffic-safety ranking of 12th out of 93, reflecting serious enforcement activity for the city's size.
- Riverside County Sheriff's deputies patrolling Coachella under contract from the Thermal Station coordinate with CHP's Indio office on highway-corridor DUI enforcement, including SR-111 and the I-10 approaches.
Where a Coachella DUI case is heard
A DUI arrest in Coachella — whether made by a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy under the city's policing contract or by the California Highway Patrol on SR-111 or I-10 — is prosecuted by the Riverside County District Attorney and heard at the Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. The Riverside County Superior Court's own description of that courthouse's jurisdiction lists Coachella by name, alongside Indio, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, Mecca, Thermal, Thousand Palms, and Desert Center — the entire Coachella Valley is served by this single courthouse. The 10-day deadline to request a DMV hearing runs on its own clock, separate from the criminal case, and must be requested directly with the DMV regardless of when your first court date is set.

A working agricultural city — not the festival or resort towns next door
Despite sharing its name with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the city of Coachella is not where the festival happens — that takes place at the Empire Polo Club in the city of Indio, several miles away. Coachella itself is one of the Coachella Valley's working agricultural centers rather than a resort destination like Palm Springs or Palm Desert: the surrounding valley is one of the most productive farm regions in the country, producing more than 90% of the dates grown commercially in the United States, and Coachella-area table grapes are typically the first commercial U.S. grape harvest of the year, reaching supermarket shelves by May — months ahead of the much larger San Joaquin Valley harvest that follows in July. (Dates overtook grapes as the valley's single most valuable crop in 2019.) Regional DUI enforcement across the valley, including on routes serving Coachella, does still spike during the festival's April weekends and the Stagecoach festival in May, even though the events themselves are staged in Indio, not Coachella.
Coachella is also one of California's most heavily Latino cities: 2020 Census figures put its population at 41,941, with 96.8% identifying as Hispanic or Latino — a demographic reality that shapes daily life, local business, and the farmworker economy that built the city. Ron Chini represents Coachella clients in English, and Farsi is spoken in his office; anyone who needs language assistance beyond that should ask the court clerk or DMV directly about interpreter services, which both the Larson Justice Center and the Indio DMV office are required to provide.
