How DUIs are policed in Cathedral City

Cathedral City is unusual among the smaller Coachella Valley cities: it runs its own full city police department rather than contracting with the Riverside County Sheriff. The Cathedral City Police Department, headquartered at 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero (non-emergency line (760) 770-0300), reports to the City Manager rather than to the County, and carries roughly 81.5 sworn and professional staff on a fiscal year 2026-27 budget of more than $21 million, serving a community of more than 52,000 full-time residents. Rick Sanchez was sworn in as chief in 2026 — the department's first Latino chief — after serving as acting chief since Chief George Crum's retirement on December 18, 2025. The department also administers the city's contract with Riverside County for animal control services.

On the freeway side, the California Highway Patrol's Indio office (CHP 630) patrols Interstate 10 and State Routes 111 and 86 through the Coachella Valley, including the segments nearest Cathedral City, and is the agency most likely to make a DUI stop there rather than on the city's own surface streets. California's Office of Traffic Safety 2023 rankings place Cathedral City (a population-group-C city) 84th of 103 comparably sized cities for DUI arrests, with 135 arrests that year — but a far more serious 3rd of 103 for alcohol-involved collision victims killed or injured (56 victims), and 17th of 103 on the state's composite traffic-safety ranking. That combination — a mid-pack arrest count against a near-top ranking for alcohol-related collision harm — is a different enforcement profile than neighboring Coachella Valley cities.

Where a Cathedral City DUI case is heard

A DUI arrest anywhere in Cathedral City is filed at the Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio — the Riverside County Superior Court's main criminal courthouse for the entire Coachella Valley. The courthouse's own page lists Cathedral City by name, alongside Indio, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Coachella, and Desert Hot Springs, as cities it serves, and names the Cathedral City Police Department among its local agencies. The Riverside County District Attorney's desert office prosecutes every case; Cathedral City, despite having its own police department, has no city attorney who prosecutes DUIs and no courthouse of its own. We found no indication that a Cathedral City DUI — misdemeanor or felony — is routed anywhere other than Larson.

Booking and getting your car back after a Cathedral City DUI arrest

A Cathedral City DUI arrest is first processed at the Cathedral City Police Department's own station on Avenida Lalo Guerrero. From there, consistent with how Coachella Valley agencies generally handle Riverside County custody, an arrestee is typically transferred into the county jail system — either the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio or the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning — depending on bed space that night, not on anything specific to the case. Whether someone is released on their own recognizance, posts bail, or qualifies for cite-and-release depends on the particulars of the stop.

Getting a car back is a separate matter from getting out of custody. A routine DUI tow under Vehicle Code §22651(h) lets the registered owner (or someone they authorize) retrieve the vehicle from the tow yard once the release paperwork, towing fee, and storage fee are handled. The much more serious mandatory 30-day impound under Vehicle Code §14602.6 only applies when the driver was also unlicensed or driving on a suspended, revoked, or interlock-restricted license at the time — not for a DUI arrest by itself. Ask us which situation applies to your stop during your free consultation.

Cathedral Canyon, the 1925 subdivision, and a city built on its own arts district

Cathedral City takes its name from Cathedral Canyon, a rock formation south of the present-day city that a 19th-century U.S. Army surveyor, Col. Henry Washington, is credited with naming because its walls reminded him of the interior of a grand cathedral. The area's first subdivision, laid out in August 1925 by a small group of early desert developers, borrowed that name for the new community, though the city itself did not incorporate until 1981. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians established a reservation in the area in 1876 that still covers roughly 28% of the city's land today — a larger tribal land share than many of its Coachella Valley neighbors. As of the most recent Census Bureau figures, the city's year-round population runs in the low 50,000s (51,493 at the 2020 Census; a 2023 Bureau estimate put it at roughly 52,356), though local tourism sources describe a seasonal swing well above that during the winter snowbird months.

Where many Coachella Valley cities lead with resort hotels, Cathedral City has spent the last two decades building a downtown identity around the arts instead. The city's Downtown Arts and Entertainment District is anchored by the restored Mary Pickford Theatre, the CVRep Playhouse, Festival Lawn, the Gregory S. Pettis Fountain of Life, and the city's newer Community Amphitheater, alongside the Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City — a 30,000-square-foot property that opened in November 2020 with more than 500 slot machines and eight live table games. That downtown district traces back to a genuine artists'-colony history in the city's Cathedral Cove neighborhood, whose early residents included painter Agnes Pelton; the city's tourism arm still promotes the slogan "Cathedral City is Where Art Lives!" and the district now hosts the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival and Cathedral City LGBT Days alongside a slate of film and theater events.

Keeping your life moving during a license suspension

Cathedral City is served by SunLine Transit Agency, the Coachella Valley's public bus system, which runs roughly ten fixed routes plus paratransit across the valley and stops throughout the city — a real option for work and medical trips while a restricted license is sorted out. For DMV paperwork, no field office or self-service kiosk operates inside Cathedral City itself; the nearest full-service option is the Palm Springs Field Office at 950 North Farrell Drive, with the Palm Desert office as a second alternative. Two DMV-partner insurance businesses inside Cathedral City — on Ramon Road and on Date Palm Drive — handle limited registration-only transactions such as renewals and transfers, but neither performs licensing work or behind-the-wheel testing. None of this affects the separate 10-day deadline to request a Driver Safety hearing after a DUI arrest.

Arrested in Cathedral City?

A DUI stop anywhere in Cathedral City is still filed at the Larson Justice Center. Call (888) 998-6938 for a free consultation before your 10-day DMV window closes.

Where will my Cathedral City DUI case be heard?
At the Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. The courthouse's own page names Cathedral City among the cities and local agencies it serves, and the Riverside County District Attorney's desert office prosecutes the case.
Does Cathedral City have its own police department?
Yes — unlike several of its smaller Coachella Valley neighbors, Cathedral City funds and runs its own full city police department, headquartered at 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, rather than contracting with the Riverside County Sheriff. It is not a sheriff's sub-station.
Will the CHP be involved in my case?
If you were stopped on Interstate 10, SR-111, or SR-86 near Cathedral City, the California Highway Patrol's Indio office (CHP 630) likely made the arrest instead of Cathedral City PD. Either way, the case is prosecuted by the Riverside County District Attorney and heard at the Larson Justice Center.
How much time do I have to save my license after a Cathedral City DUI arrest?
Just 10 days from the date of arrest. Miss it, and the suspension takes effect automatically regardless of how the criminal case turns out. You can call DMV Driver Safety directly at (833) 543-7703, but calling Ron first at (888) 998-6938 means the request gets filed correctly the first time.
Can Ron Chini defend my Cathedral City DUI from Irvine?
Yes. Ron's office is in Irvine, and he defends DUI cases throughout Riverside County, including Cathedral City and the rest of the Coachella Valley. He handles both the Larson Justice Center court case and your DMV hearing. Free consultation, no obligation.
