Fountain Valley sits between Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa, split nearly in half by the San Diego Freeway (I-405) and anchored by Mile Square Regional Park — roughly 640 acres (OC Parks' own figure is 607 acres for the portion it operates), with two 18-hole golf courses, two fishing lakes, and open fields that host weekend soccer and softball leagues. Incorporated in 1957 under the motto “A Nice Place to Live,” the city of about 57,000 also sits inside the broader Little Saigon area: Fountain Valley's Vietnamese-American community is smaller than next-door Westminster's, but it has been here since the refugee resettlement of the late 1970s and remains a real part of the city's character. A DUI arrest here — whether it happened on Brookhurst Street, Talbert Avenue, or the I-405 itself — is not prosecuted in Fountain Valley. It goes to a courthouse in a different city.

Court & DMV details
Why the drive matters
Unlike Westminster, where the West Justice Center sits inside the city, a Fountain Valley defendant has to travel for every hearing — arraignment, pretrial conferences, and (if it comes to that) trial. The Orange County Superior Court's own West Justice Center page lists Fountain Valley among the nine cities that building serves. If your citation or release paperwork names a different courthouse, tell us before you assume anything — a felony-level DUI can route through the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana instead.
Fountain Valley PD, the CHP, and what actually happens to your car
Fountain Valley runs its own police department — headquartered at 10200 Slater Avenue (non-emergency line (714) 593-4485) — rather than contracting with the Orange County Sheriff's Department the way some south-county cities do. FVPD periodically runs DUI/driver's-license checkpoints; past department press releases have placed checkpoints at Brookhurst Street and Talbert Avenue and at Warner Avenue and Magnolia Avenue, among other high-collision corridors, with locations chosen from collision and arrest data. The California Highway Patrol has jurisdiction on the I-405 corridor that bisects the city; a DUI arrest made by CHP on the freeway still routes to the same West Justice Center as a city-street arrest.
- A routine arrest tow (Vehicle Code §22651(h)) happens in most DUI arrests simply because the arrested driver can't drive the car away — it isn't an extra penalty. Under this section the vehicle is typically released once towing and storage fees are paid and someone with a valid license and proof of registration takes custody of it.
- A mandatory 30-day impound (Vehicle Code §14602.6) is a separate, much harsher hold. It applies only when the driver's license was suspended or revoked, the driver had never been licensed, or a court-ordered ignition-interlock restriction was violated — not automatically to every DUI arrest where the driver still holds a valid license.
- Mixing the two up is one of the most common things families get wrong after a Fountain Valley arrest. Ask us which section actually applies to your stop before assuming your car is locked up for a month.
Mile Square Park, the local hospital, and what's genuinely Fountain Valley
Two local landmarks matter here beyond the courthouse. Mile Square Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in Orange County — big enough for two golf courses, two fishing lakes, and a 20-acre native-plant nature area — and it sits almost entirely inside city limits. And Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Medical Center, at 17100 Euclid Street, is the hospital many Fountain Valley DUI arrests and DUI-collision injuries pass through for a blood draw or medical treatment; it changed hands in March 2024, when UCI Health completed a roughly $975 million acquisition of it and three other former Tenet Healthcare hospitals. On language: Ron Chini's practice is conducted in English and Farsi, not Vietnamese — if you're part of Fountain Valley's Vietnamese-American community, many clients bring a family member or interpreter to the free consultation, which is no obstacle to getting a clear, honest explanation of your charges and deadlines.
