Aliso Viejo is Orange County's youngest city — incorporated in 2001 as a master-planned community built around Soka University and the Aliso Viejo Town Center, with the SR-73 toll road running directly through it. If you were arrested for DUI anywhere in the city, Ron Chini defends Aliso Viejo DUI cases, and the 10-day clock on your DMV hearing is already running.

Aliso Viejo policing: an OCSD-contract city since day one

Aliso Viejo has never run its own police department. Since incorporating, the city has contracted with the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) for all law enforcement services. Police Services is led by a Sheriff's captain serving as Aliso Viejo's Chief of Police Services (Captain Ryan Buhr, as of this writing), with a staff of 3 sergeants, 18 patrol deputies, 2 deputies assigned to a Special Enforcement Team, roughly one and a half investigator positions, 2 community services officers, and 1 emergency management program coordinator. If you were arrested in Aliso Viejo, the deputy who wrote your report carries an OCSD badge, not a separate city-PD badge — the same arrangement as neighboring Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, and San Clemente, but with its own distinct staffing and command structure.

On the freeway side, SR-73 — the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor toll road — runs directly through Aliso Viejo between the Greenfield Drive toll exit and the interchange with SR-133 toward Laguna Beach. A DUI stop on the tolled portion of SR-73 is typically made by the California Highway Patrol rather than an OCSD deputy, which can change who wrote your report even though the case still goes to the same courthouse. Tell Ron Chini exactly where your stop happened — on a city street, inside the Aliso Viejo Town Center area, or on the toll road itself — since the agency and the circumstances both matter to your defense.

Aliso Viejo also has a reputation for being safe: SafeWise's 2024 ranking placed it 2nd among California's safest cities, behind only neighboring Rancho Santa Margarita. That reputation doesn't mean DUI enforcement lets up — OCSD patrols and occasional checkpoints still run through the city, including around the restaurant and nightlife corridor at the Aliso Viejo Town Center on weekend nights.

Booked after an Aliso Viejo DUI arrest

There's no jail inside Aliso Viejo city limits. Because OCSD handles policing here under contract, anyone taken into custody is driven to the Orange County Sheriff's Intake Release Center on North Flower Street in Santa Ana — the county's round-the-clock booking hub, where the bail-cashier window never closes. Trying to find someone after an Aliso Viejo arrest? Call first; how quickly they're released, and whether they're moved elsewhere in the system, depends on the specifics of the case.

Was your car towed or impounded after the arrest?

A standard DUI tow is usually made under Vehicle Code §22651(h), which lets an officer have the vehicle towed when an arrested driver can't arrange for its care; the registered owner or an authorized agent can typically arrange release once the car reaches the tow yard, though storage fees run from day one. If you were driving on a suspended, revoked, or no valid license — common after an earlier DUI-related suspension — Vehicle Code §14602.6 instead authorizes a mandatory 30-day impound hold, with a separate hearing right if you request one in writing within 10 days of the tow. Which rule applied to your car depends on your license status at the time of the stop, so ask the arresting agency which code section it used.

The Harbor Justice Center's own served-area list names Aliso Viejo by name alongside roughly a dozen other South County cities — Dana Point, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano — so the courthouse itself is not unique to Aliso Viejo. Aliso Viejo is also one of 13 Orange County cities that contracts with OCSD rather than running its own department, a group that includes Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Stanton, Villa Park, and Yorba Linda. What differs by city is the specific patrol staffing, who writes the arrest report, and where the vehicle gets impounded — which is why the policing section above matters as much as the courthouse address.

Orange County's youngest city — built in a single generation

Aliso Viejo became Orange County's 34th city on July 1, 2001 — the only OC city incorporated since 2000, which makes it the county's youngest. The land traces back to the old Moulton Ranch; in 1976 the Mission Viejo Company purchased the remaining roughly 6,600 acres to build a new planned community it named Aliso Viejo, decades before cityhood arrived. That master-planned identity still shapes the city today: wide boulevards, HOA-governed neighborhoods, and a centrally planned business and retail core rather than an organic downtown.

Two landmarks capture that planned-community identity. Soka University of America, a private liberal-arts university at 1 University Drive, was dedicated on May 3, 2001 — the same year Aliso Viejo incorporated — with a 103-acre campus and 18 buildings. And the Aliso Viejo Town Center, a roughly 380,000-square-foot open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment hub anchored by Ralphs and a Regal Cinemas multiplex, draws some of the heaviest weekend foot traffic in the area — exactly the kind of restaurant-and-bar corridor where OCSD patrols concentrate on Friday and Saturday nights. As the city was built out, roughly 2,600 acres were separately dedicated to Orange County to help create the Aliso Viejo and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, the 4,500-acre open-space park that still borders the city and carries its name. If your stop happened near the Town Center, along the park's edge, or anywhere else in the city, tell Ron Chini exactly where and how it happened.

Where will my Aliso Viejo DUI case be heard?
At the Harbor Justice Center, 4601 Jamboree Road, Newport Beach — the Orange County Superior Court location whose own served-area list names Aliso Viejo by name, along with roughly a dozen other South County cities. The case is prosecuted by the Orange County District Attorney's Office, not a city attorney (Aliso Viejo doesn't have one for criminal matters).
Does Aliso Viejo have its own police department?
No. Aliso Viejo has contracted with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for all law enforcement services since the city was built, and OCSD staffs Police Services with a captain as Chief of Police Services, sergeants, patrol deputies, a Special Enforcement Team, investigators, and community services officers. A DUI arrest in Aliso Viejo is made by an OCSD deputy, not a separate city police officer.
I was stopped on SR-73 near Aliso Viejo — does that change anything?
It likely means the California Highway Patrol wrote your report rather than an OCSD deputy, since the CHP generally handles DUI enforcement on SR-73 — the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor toll road that runs directly through the city. The case still goes to the Harbor Justice Center either way, but check which agency's name is on your citation — it affects where you request records and vehicle-release paperwork.
Where are Aliso Viejo DUI arrests booked?
Aliso Viejo doesn't operate its own jail. Because the city contracts with OCSD for policing, an arrest here is processed at the Orange County Sheriff's Intake Release Center on North Flower Street in Santa Ana — the county's central jail-system entry point, with bail services available any hour of the day or night.
What's my 10-day deadline if I was arrested in Aliso Viejo?
You have 10 calendar days from the arrest (or from the date on your suspension order) to request a DMV Administrative Per Se (APS) hearing. That fight is separate from the criminal case at Harbor Justice Center, and it's the only way to challenge an automatic license suspension before it takes effect. The DMV's Driver Safety Office handles APS hearings at (833) 543-7703; see our DMV hearing page for the full process.
