DUI Defense at the Santa Clarita Courthouse

A DUI arrest anywhere in the Santa Clarita Valley — and, by most accounts, the high desert communities of Acton and Agua Dulce as well — tends to land at the same building: the Santa Clarita Courthouse on West Valencia Boulevard. Ron Chini defends DUI cases filed there, and the clock that can't wait for a court date is already running: you have 10 days from arrest to request a DMV hearing before your license is automatically suspended.

The Santa Clarita Courthouse sits on West Valencia Boulevard as the Los Angeles County Superior Court's North Valley District outpost for the Santa Clarita Valley — a valley that, by the Judicial Council's own count, is the fastest-growing part of the entire county. Misdemeanor DUI and traffic cases out of Santa Clarita, Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, and Val Verde are filed here, and the same courthouse is commonly cited as the venue for DUI cases out of the unincorporated high-desert communities of Acton and Agua Dulce as well. Ron Chini defends DUI cases filed at this courthouse from his Irvine office, and the deadline that doesn't wait for an arraignment date is already ticking: California gives you 10 days from arrest to request a DMV hearing before the suspension becomes automatic.

One building for a city — and, by most accounts, two desert neighbors

Santa Clarita itself has no police department of its own; patrol runs through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station on Golden Valley Road, while the California Highway Patrol's Newhall Area office takes the freeway stops on I-5, SR-14, and the interchange where they meet. That part is well documented. What's less certain is how far the courthouse's own reach extends: LA County's official locator lists only Santa Clarita and its immediate unincorporated fringe — Canyon Country, Castaic, Newhall, Saugus, Stevenson Ranch, Val Verde — as this courthouse's jurisdiction. A separate practitioner source, cross-checked against this firm's own page for Acton, instead names the Santa Clarita Courthouse as the courthouse commonly used for misdemeanor DUI cases out of Acton and neighboring Agua Dulce, two unincorporated high-desert communities roughly 20 miles east-northeast along SR-14 that have no city government or police department of their own. Nothing here should be read as a confirmed court record for either community — if you were arrested in Acton or Agua Dulce, your citation or the clerk's office is the final word on which building your case is actually filed in.

A courthouse the state has already slated for replacement

The building itself is a factor worth knowing about before your first appearance. The Judicial Council of California's own facilities program rates the current Santa Clarita Courthouse as high-risk for seismic deficiency under FEMA's P-154 standard, and flags it for space shortfalls and security gaps that come with trying to run a fast-growing valley's entire misdemeanor, traffic, and civil caseload out of an aging building. A replacement — roughly 278,000 square feet with 24 courtrooms, large enough to also absorb the Santa Clarita Administrative Center and the Sylmar Juvenile Courthouse — is in the state's project pipeline, currently in land acquisition, with construction targeted to start around 2030 and finish around 2033. Until then, the existing building on Valencia Boulevard keeps running the docket, parking lot and all.

Who files the charge, and where felonies go instead

Santa Clarita has never run its own city prosecutor, so every DUI filed out of this courthouse — misdemeanor or felony — is charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, which keeps its Santa Clarita Area Office inside the same building, in Room 1. In practice, though, this courthouse doesn't carry the valley's entire DUI caseload by itself: as Santa Clarita's own felony calendar has narrowed, felony-level DUI charges and preliminary hearings from the area have increasingly moved instead to the San Fernando Courthouse, also a North Valley District location, about 20 miles south over the grade. A misdemeanor arrest is the far more common outcome and almost always stays local; a felony-level charge — typically driving-under-the-influence causing injury, or a fourth DUI within ten years — is the scenario where you should expect the case to move.

The 10-day DMV deadline doesn't wait for either courthouse

Whichever building ends up hearing the criminal case, the DMV runs on a separate and much faster clock. You have 10 days from the date of arrest to request a Driver Safety hearing and contest the automatic suspension of your license — miss that window and the suspension takes effect on its own schedule, regardless of what happens later in court. California now conducts these hearings by phone or video, which speeds up the process but does not move the deadline. How Ron defends a DUI filed at the Santa Clarita Courthouse

Because the agency side of a Santa Clarita Valley DUI is fairly predictable — Sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station for a surface-street stop, CHP Newhall for a freeway stop — Ron's first step is pulling that specific agency's arrest report, any body-worn or dash camera footage, and the maintenance and calibration records behind whatever breath or blood test was used. He reviews the legal basis for the stop and how field sobriety testing was actually conducted against that agency's own training standards, then decides whether the better path is negotiating with the DA's Santa Clarita office, filing a suppression motion, or taking the case to trial — and, if the charge is felony-level and headed to San Fernando instead, making sure that transition doesn't cost you time or leverage. He does not claim to be a certified specialist, and no result is ever guaranteed — but he has defended DUI cases throughout Los Angeles County since 2009, works the DMV hearing in parallel so it never falls through the cracks, and meets clients in English or Farsi from his Irvine office.

Where will my Santa Clarita DUI be heard?
At the Santa Clarita Courthouse, 23747 West Valencia Blvd., Santa Clarita, CA 91355 — a Los Angeles County Superior Court, North Valley District branch. See our dedicated page for Santa Clarita.
Does this courthouse also handle Acton and Agua Dulce DUI cases?
Commonly, yes, for misdemeanor matters — but that routing comes from a secondary practitioner source rather than a confirmed LA County court record, so treat it as a strong likelihood, not a guarantee. See our pages for Acton and Agua Dulce, and confirm the exact courthouse from your own citation or by calling the clerk.
Who prosecutes a DUI from this courthouse?
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, through its Santa Clarita Area Office based inside the courthouse building (Room 1, (661) 888-7112). Santa Clarita has no city prosecutor of its own, so the DA's office files and prosecutes both misdemeanor and felony DUI cases from the area.
Will my case be moved to the San Fernando Courthouse?
Only if it's charged as a felony. Misdemeanor DUI and traffic cases generally stay at the Santa Clarita Courthouse; felony-level DUI charges and preliminary hearings have increasingly been routed instead to the San Fernando Courthouse, 900 3rd St., San Fernando, CA 91340 — another North Valley District location about 20 miles south.
Which agency likely investigated my case?
For a surface-street stop in Santa Clarita, almost certainly the LA County Sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station, 26201 Golden Valley Road. For a stop on I-5, SR-14, or the interchange between them, it's a California Highway Patrol Newhall Area case instead, out of 28648 The Old Rd, Valencia.
How do I protect my license?
