How DUIs are policed in La Puente
La Puente has no police department of its own. The city contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and patrol inside city limits is handled by the Industry Sheriff's Station (150 N. Hudson Ave., City of Industry), which covers La Puente alongside City of Industry, La Habra Heights, Valinda, Bassett/North Whittier, and Hacienda Heights. La Puente is large enough within that coverage area that Industry Station runs a dedicated Special Assignment Team focused specifically on the city, working with local schools, churches, and businesses on community concerns — it isn't just generic countywide patrol.
Industry Station deputies have also run large-scale DUI/driver's-license checkpoints directly on La Puente's streets — past checkpoints have been staged on Hacienda Boulevard, a major corridor running through the city. La Puente itself isn't bisected by a freeway — the city's own materials point residents to the I-10 to the north (through neighboring Baldwin Park/West Covina) and State Route 60 to the south for freeway access. A stop made on either of those freeways near La Puente is more likely to involve the California Highway Patrol's Baldwin Park office, whose coverage area borders the city directly. Either way, a DUI arrest anywhere in La Puente lands at the same courthouse.
- Industry Sheriff's Station — contracted patrol, dedicated La Puente Special Assignment Team, periodic DUI/DL checkpoints on corridors like Hacienda Boulevard
- CHP Baldwin Park office — covers the I-10 (to the north, in Baldwin Park/West Covina) and SR-60 (to the south) corridors residents use to reach a freeway
- La Puente has no stand-alone municipal police department
Where a La Puente DUI case is heard
Whether the stop was made by an Industry Station deputy or the CHP, a La Puente DUI case is filed and heard at the El Monte Courthouse, which the Los Angeles Superior Court designates as having jurisdiction over El Monte, La Puente, Rosemead, and South El Monte. That's a separate building from Industry Station — the courthouse handles the case itself, while Industry Station handles the arrest and initial booking.

Booking and getting a car back after a La Puente arrest
Most La Puente DUI arrests made by a Sheriff's deputy are initially booked at Industry Sheriff's Station (150 N. Hudson Ave., City of Industry) before a defendant is cited out, released on bail, or transferred further into the LA County jail system. If the longer-term custody chain applies, men are typically moved toward the Inmate Reception Center and facilities like Men's Central Jail or Twin Towers, while women go to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. If CHP made the stop on the I-10, booking may route the same way through LASD custody. A vehicle impounded at the scene is normally held at a tow yard designated by whichever agency made the stop, and any hold has to be resolved before the car can be released.
Rancho La Puente, the Donut Hole, and a city that isn't City of Industry
La Puente has its own, separate identity from the courthouse's other namesake neighbors. The city traces back to the 48,000-acre Rancho La Puente, granted in 1842 to John Rowland and William Workman; La Puente itself didn't incorporate as a city until August 1, 1956, carving out roughly 3.5 square miles of the valley floor as its own municipality with its own council-manager government. Today it's a predominantly Latino community — around 80% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino per the 2020 Census — of roughly 38,000 people packed into one of the San Gabriel Valley's more densely built residential footprints. The city's best-known landmark is The Donut Hole, the drive-through bakery at 15300 E. Amar Rd. built in 1968, where customers still drive straight through two giant donut-shaped tunnels to place an order — it's one of the last survivors of a 1960s programmatic-architecture donut chain and has been family-run since 1979. None of that changes how a DUI case is handled, but it's a reminder that a La Puente stop isn't the same city, same department, or same community as El Monte, Rosemead, or South El Monte, even though all four share a courthouse.
