How DUIs are policed in Irwindale
Unlike many smaller San Gabriel Valley cities, Irwindale runs its own police force rather than contracting with the Sheriff. The Irwindale Police Department has policed the city directly since November 1, 1960 — the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department handled the job briefly after incorporation, but the City Council voted that September to stand up a municipal department, which started with seven motorcycles and a single patrol car. The department is headquartered beside Irwindale City Hall, 5050 N. Irwindale Avenue, in a building it has occupied since 1966, and today runs with roughly 37 sworn and civilian employees under Chief Ty Henshaw, split across patrol, investigations, and records/communications. Fire protection, by contrast, is handled under contract by the Los Angeles County Fire Department rather than by the city itself.
Geography gives Irwindale a different freeway exposure than most of its small neighbors: Interstate 210 and Interstate 605 actually meet inside the city, at the interchange bordering the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area. The California Highway Patrol's Baldwin Park-area office, 14039 Francisquito Avenue, Baldwin Park, generally covers DUI enforcement on that freeway interchange and the surrounding unincorporated county roadways; a stop made on Irwindale's own surface streets — Live Oak Avenue, Irwindale Avenue, or the industrial corridors around the quarries — is handled directly by an Irwindale PD officer.
- Irwindale incorporated on August 6, 1957 and became a charter city in 1986; its own police department has run city law enforcement continuously since November 1, 1960, making it the primary agency for virtually every DUI arrest made inside city limits.
- The department claims two early firsts for the San Gabriel Valley: the first local agency to use radar for speed enforcement and the first to field a police canine unit.
Where an Irwindale DUI case is heard
An Irwindale DUI arrest is generally heard at the West Covina Courthouse, 1427 West Covina Parkway, West Covina, CA 91790 — the nearest Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal branch to the city, and the venue identified for Irwindale by at least one regional defense-firm directory. The court's own online location record for this address actually lists its jurisdiction as El Monte, La Puente, Rosemead, and South El Monte — but this site's own West Covina Courthouse hub has identified that specific listing as a known data-quality bug (it's really the El Monte Courthouse's jurisdiction, mistakenly attached to West Covina's online record), so it neither confirms nor rules out Irwindale either way. Treat West Covina as the likely venue rather than a guarantee, and confirm the correct courthouse from your citation, arraignment notice, or by calling the criminal intake line directly at (626) 813-3239.
Assuming the case stays at West Covina, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office prosecutes it — Irwindale does not maintain a city attorney's office for misdemeanor DUI work. The West Covina Courthouse handles both misdemeanor and felony matters, consistent with how this site's other East District courthouse pages describe their own criminal dockets.

Booking and getting a car back after an Irwindale arrest
Because Irwindale runs its own department, an arrest there is typically booked first at the police station beside City Hall, 5050 N. Irwindale Avenue — that is an intake stop, not long-term custody. From there, the county system takes over: men are usually moved downtown to the Inmate Reception Center, Men's Central Jail, or Twin Towers, while women are transferred to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. Whether someone is released on their own recognizance, posts bail, or is cited and released depends entirely on the specifics of the stop. If a family member can't locate someone arrested in Irwindale, our office can help track down which facility they were moved to.
Your vehicle is handled on a separate track from your custody status. Most DUI tows are ordinary: the car sits at the tow yard until you, or someone you authorize, pays the towing and storage fees and completes the release paperwork. A 30-day mandatory impound under Vehicle Code §14602.6 is a narrower, harsher outcome that only applies when the driver was also unlicensed, suspended, revoked, or driving on a restricted license without the interlock device it requires — it is not an automatic consequence of a DUI stop by itself. We'll sort out which rule applies to your arrest during a free consultation.
A quarry town built around the San Gabriel River
Irwindale incorporated on August 6, 1957 with roughly 9.6 square miles of land — a large footprint for the San Gabriel Valley — but held only 1,472 residents at the 2020 Census (up modestly from 1,422 in 2010), making it one of the smallest cities in Los Angeles County by population despite its size. The gap between land and people is deliberate: much of that acreage is given over to the rock quarries that have defined the local economy since commercial aggregate mining began there around 1900, when the San Gabriel River's natural flattening point left behind huge natural deposits of sand and gravel washed down from the San Gabriel Mountains. By the 1920s, a company called Union Rock controlled as much as 80% of the region's rock, sand, and gravel supply out of plants concentrated in and around Irwindale, and quarry operators kept shipping material to pave the freeways and streets of greater Los Angeles for decades afterward. Rock quarrying remains, by the city's own Chamber of Commerce's account, Irwindale's leading source of revenue today.
That industrial footprint also explains most of what people recognize about Irwindale. Huy Fong Foods built its sriracha hot sauce factory on a 23-acre site at Azusa Canyon Road and Cypress Street, consolidating out of Rosemead; an odor dispute with neighbors led the city to sue in late 2013, but the city council voted to drop the lawsuit on May 28, 2014 after the company installed new odor-filtration equipment, and the plant still runs public tours. The Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, an 836-acre Los Angeles County park built around a 70-acre fishing lake at 15501 E. Arrow Highway, sits at the same I-210/I-605 interchange noted above and has hosted the Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California every year since 2005. The Irwindale Event Center, formerly home to the Irwindale Speedway and dragstrip (a separate, later venue that opened in 1999), closed out its final season in December 2024, with its racing operations relocating to Kern Raceway in Bakersfield and the 63-acre property slated for industrial redevelopment. Irwindale's older motorsports history is a different venue entirely: the original Irwindale Raceway drag strip, where In-N-Out Burger co-founder Harry Snyder owned a 50% stake from 1965 to around 1972 and ran the concession stands himself, serving the chain's burgers. A Miller Brewing plant that once anchored the city's industrial tax base closed in 2020, another sign of how much Irwindale's small population still rides on heavy industry rather than housing.
