DUI Attorney in Alhambra

A stop near Main Street's restaurant row or off the I-10 in Alhambra, the "Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley," can set two very different deadlines in motion. One is the criminal case the Los Angeles County District Attorney files at the Alhambra Courthouse. The other is the DMV side — and you have just 10 days to demand a hearing before your license is automatically suspended. Ron Chini is an experienced DUI defense attorney who handles Alhambra cases from his Irvine office. Call (888) 998-6938 for a free consultation, 7 days a week.

Alhambra packs a dense, walkable downtown into a city that the regional freeway grid runs straight through. Main Street's restaurant row and the Valley Boulevard corridor draw heavy nighttime traffic, and two major routes converge here: the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) crosses the city's southern edge, and the SR-710 freeway dead-ends at Alhambra's southwest corner at Valley Boulevard — the long-disputed "710 gap" stub. That mix of busy surface streets, a large dining-and-nightlife draw, and freeway entry points means impaired-driving stops in Alhambra come from city officers, sheriff's units, and the CHP depending on where the stop happens. Knowing which agency made the stop, where the case will be filed, and who will prosecute it is the starting point for any real defense.

How DUIs are policed in Alhambra

Alhambra has its own municipal police force, the Alhambra Police Department — it is not a Los Angeles County Sheriff contract city, so its own officers run patrol, traffic enforcement, and DUI stops within city limits. Along corridors like Main Street and Valley Boulevard, the department announces DUI/driver's-license checkpoints in advance and also fields roving saturation patrols, and it says it picks checkpoint sites where impaired-driving crashes and arrests have clustered. Funding for the program comes largely through California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) grants, which in turn draw on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration money.

Officers are trained to look for impairment from alcohol as well as cannabis, prescription medications, and other drugs, using Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and, in many cases, drug-recognition evaluation. As a dense, central San Gabriel Valley city with a heavy dining and nightlife corridor, Alhambra is generally an active-enforcement community for impaired driving among comparable San Gabriel Valley cities. We have not asserted a specific OTS rank, arrest count, or collision figure here because those numbers change year to year — an attorney should confirm Alhambra's current OTS profile before relying on any specific statistic.

On the freeways, the California Highway Patrol — not city police — typically handles stops. The CHP's East Los Angeles area office patrols the I-10 and the I-710 corridor through this part of the county, with the Baldwin Park office covering I-10 further east into the San Gabriel Valley. Which CHP office made a freeway stop can affect where paperwork is filed, so it is worth pinning down early.

Who prosecutes an Alhambra DUI — and where

Alhambra cases are heard at the Alhambra Courthouse, 150 W. Commonwealth Avenue. The Los Angeles County locator lists it in the Northeast District, with jurisdiction over cases arising in Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, and Temple City, and the building has a criminal intake office. A DUI that begins with an Alhambra Police arrest normally starts there.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney lists an Alhambra Branch Office at the same address, so the prosecutor on your case is likely to come from the District Attorney's Office. Felony charges, such as a DUI that injured someone, are also filed by that office. Your court papers name the prosecuting agency, so compare them with what you were told at booking.

This courthouse does not have its own page on this site. For a county-wide picture of how a DUI moves from arraignment to resolution, start with the Los Angeles County DUI defense overview, and confirm your courtroom assignment on your paperwork before the first date.

Alhambra's own jail and getting a towed car released

Alhambra operates its own city jail, which the city describes as housing municipal arrestees. That differs from a contract-sheriff city, where a deputy usually takes you straight into the county system. If a relative is being held, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department advises calling the local city jail and asking for the watch commander, who can say whether the person will be released there or moved to the county's Inmate Reception Center. Alhambra's jail posts visiting hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.

For a towed car, start with Alhambra Police dispatch at 626-570-5151 and give the license plate. If you do not know the plate, dispatch can search by the registered owner's name and address. When the car is on a 30-day hold under Vehicle Code section 14602.6(a), the city says to call its Traffic Division at 626-570-5119 and schedule an appointment for a hearing. The city says the car goes only to a registered owner with a valid California driver's license, it must be currently registered, and a $275 administrative fee is due at release. If your own license is suspended, plan for the registered owner to handle the pickup.

Buses along Main Street and Valley Boulevard, and the closest DMV counters

Alhambra Community Transit, the city's own bus system, runs a Green Line and a Blue Line that connect to Cal State LA, the Metrolink station, and the LA Metro Busway. The city's service alert also shows Metro Lines 76, 78, 260, and 261 serving stops along Valley Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard. The city says its buses do not run on major holidays, and a bus stop improvement project is expected to affect some stops until summer 2027, so check the city's transit page before counting on a particular stop.

Driver's license business is a separate trip. The DMV's office list shows no field office in Alhambra. Offices that appear in DMV's nearby listings include Montebello (424 N. Wilcox Avenue), El Monte (4000 Arden Drive), and Lincoln Park (3529 N. Mission Road, Los Angeles). A visit to any of them does not replace the DMV hearing request, which must be made within 10 days of the arrest. For how a suspension works while the case is pending, see our page on license suspension.

Who prosecutes a DUI in Alhambra — the city attorney or the District Attorney?

The Los Angeles County District Attorney prosecutes Alhambra DUI cases — both misdemeanor and felony. Although Alhambra is a charter city, it does not maintain its own criminal prosecutor's office, so unlike Los Angeles, Long Beach, or Pasadena (where a City Attorney handles misdemeanor DUI), the County DA handles Alhambra cases throughout. The DA even runs a branch office inside the Alhambra Courthouse.

Which courthouse will my Alhambra DUI case go to?

Almost always the Alhambra Courthouse (Los Angeles Superior Court, Northeast District) on West Commonwealth Avenue, which also serves Monterey Park, San Gabriel, San Marino, South Pasadena, and Temple City. We don't maintain a separate page for this courthouse, so see our Los Angeles County DUI Defense hub for how these cases proceed.

Does Alhambra run DUI checkpoints?

Yes. The Alhambra Police Department posts its DUI/driver's-license checkpoints ahead of time and works roving saturation patrols too, usually on California Office of Traffic Safety grant money, steering them toward streets with a track record of impaired-driving crashes and arrests. On the I-10 and the SR-710 corridor through the city, that DUI enforcement falls to the CHP instead. A checkpoint stop has its own legal rules, and how the stop was conducted can matter to your defense.

I was just arrested for DUI in Alhambra — what should I do first?

Act on the 10-day DMV deadline. Separate from the court case, you have only 10 days from your arrest to request a DMV hearing, or your license is automatically suspended. A defense attorney can request that hearing for you and start examining the stop, the testing, and the paperwork right away. Call (888) 998-6938 for a free consultation, 7 days a week.
